16 October 2023 – Accusing Israel of genocide [only 9 days after the October 7th attempted genocide]:
“Denunciar ese genocidio no es alinearse con Hamás, es una obligación democrática.”
Translation: “Denouncing that genocide is not aligning oneself with Hamas; it is a democratic obligation.”
Belarra made the statement in response to the Israeli Embassy’s criticism of remarks by Spanish government ministers. She also accused Israel of war crimes, mass bombing and cutting off water and electricity to Gaza.
17 October 2023 – Israel as an occupying state:
“El Estado de Israel es un Estado ocupante.”
Translation: “The State of Israel is an occupying state.”
14 October 2024 – Comparing Israeli actions with Nazi gas chambers:
“¿Qué diferencia hay entre esto y meter a la gente en cámaras de gas como hacían los nazis?”
Translation: “What is the difference between this and putting people in gas chambers as the Nazis did?”
The question referred to reports and images of displaced Palestinians being burned alive in a fire in Gaza. The quotation is reproduced in a 2024 report on antisemitism by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain.
It draws a direct comparison between Israeli conduct and Nazi mass murder.
18 October 2023 – Diplomatic and economic isolation:
Belarra called for Spain to suspend diplomatic relations with Israel, impose exemplary economic sanctions on Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, and support an arms embargo. She also called for Netanyahu to be brought before the International Criminal Court.
22 October 2023 – Demanding sanctions:
“Pedirle a Netanyahu que cumpla un derecho internacional que desprecia no sirve para nada.”
Translation: “Asking Netanyahu to comply with international law, which he disregards, is useless.”
She continued:
“Lo que hay que hacer es pararle los pies con sanciones económicas ejemplares y embargo de armas.”
Translation: “What must be done is to stop him through exemplary economic sanctions and an arms embargo.”
20 January 2024 – Madrid pro-Palestinian demonstration:
Belarra personally walked while holding a banner reading:
“Alto al genocidio. Palestina, libre del río al mar.”
Translation: “Stop the genocide. Palestine, free from the river to the sea.”
Servimedia’s report explicitly identifies Belarra as carrying the banner during the demonstration.
28-29 October 2024 – “Final Solution” and concentration camps:
“Israel está implementando en Gaza su propia ‘solución final’, aplicando campos de concentración (comunidades cerradas) y el exterminio total de su población empezando por el norte de la franja.”
Translation: “Israel is implementing its own ‘Final Solution’ in Gaza, applying concentration camps (closed communities) and the total extermination of its population, starting in the north of the Strip.”
She concluded by demanding that Israel be stopped and its military capabilities dismantled. The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) explicitly condemned this statement as antisemitic, arguing that it violated the spirit of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition.
“Final Solution” is the historical term for the Nazi plan to murder Europe’s Jews. Applying it to Israel invokes that specific history and presents Israel’s actions as a project of total extermination.
29 October 2023 – “Planned genocide” and ethnic cleansing:
RTVE reported that Belarra described Israel’s offensive in Gaza as:
“genocidio planificado y una limpieza étnica”
Translation: “planned genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
28 November 2024 – Israel as a colonial power:
“No estamos ante una guerra, estamos ante un genocidio.”
Translation: “We are not facing a war; we are facing a genocide.”
Belarra also called Israel a “potencia colonial” (“colonial power”) and described Palestinians as a people resisting and defending their right to self-determination. She argued that the conflict did not begin on 7 October 2023.
